From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ranitomeya benedicta, sometimes called the blessed poison frog,[1] is a species of poison dart frog found in the lowland rainforest of the Pampas del Sacramento in southern Loreto and eastern San Martín Region, northeastern Peru.[1][3] Before 2008, the species was considered a subspecies of Ranitomeya fantastica.[2] The IUCN considers the species vulnerable because of limited habitat range, habitat loss, and collection for the pet trade.[1][4]

Etymology:
The epithet "benedicta" is derived from the Latin benedictus (= blessed) and refers to the range of the species, the Pampas del Sacramento (≈ Hallowed hills). The name was also chosen because the species is difficult to find and the authors felt personally "blessed" by finding them (B ROWN ET.AL.2008)
Classification:
Amphibia-> Anura-> Dendrobatoidea-> Dendrobatidae-> Dendrobatinae-> Ranitomeya -> Ranitomeya benedicta B ROWN , T WOMEY , P EPPER & R ODRIGUEZ , 2008
Group:
Fantastica clade
Note on the scheme:
Until the description as a separate species, the species was regarded as the morph of R. fantastica . However, R. benedicta can be clearly differentiated from this species by morphological measurements (tibia length), molecular genetic characteristics and call parameters (shorter notes and louder calls) (Brown et al., 2008).
Threat status :
There is no official IUCN threat status yet (IUCN 2008). B ROWN ET AL . (2008) propose the status Vulnerable (IUVN, 2001) according to IUCN criteria, since the species is only known from a small
distribution area of probably less than 20,000 km 2 , occurs only in relatively undisturbed habitats and there as well has only a patchy distribution. The biggest threats may be the progressive loss of habitat through clearing and, due to the brilliant coloration, increased demand from the animal trade.
size
Medium sized poison dart frog type with a max KRLof 20.2 mm (B ROWN ET AL .
Grooming:
Live animals show a typical scarlet head with black spots over the eyes. In some individuals, these spots may be fused in the middle of a W-shaped head drawing, which can be used as a face make-up over the eyes. Frequently, this facial mask also covers the tympanum. The red head drawing continues up to the shoulders. The rest of the body is black with a blue net pattern. The blue mesh pattern appears more diffuse in certain populations and gives the impression of a uniformly dark colored body color. Legs, finger and toe discs show the same color as the body. Throat red mostly with black marbling. Belly black with discrete or diffuse blue net drawing. Nostrils black and surrounded by black spots,

Variation:
So far only two variants known. Populations of the environment Shucushuyacu show a distinct pattern of nets in blue on the black body color, while animals from the environment of Pampa Hermosa have a rather diffuse blue pattern and thus appear darker.
