Brown adult female – Ventralla quadrata – giant katydid
KATYDID SPECIES :
- Ventralla katydid :
Ventralla quadrata is a katydid species naturally occuring in Malaysia. They are not commonly found as pet katydids.
This species eat bramble leaves and needs high humidity and high temperature. Especially the nymphs need a lot of humidity, but are also sensitive to mold and stagnant air. The adult males are extremely noisy and can therefore not be kept inside the house without you going crazy.
Here you can find some pictures of this species.
ELIMAEA SP. (S. LAT.)
Brief Description :
Distribution: tropical Asia (e.g. Pakistan, India, Burma Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia)
Stock from: Thailand
Size: ♂: ca 40mm ♀: ca 40mm
General Care: 25-30°C, 60-80% rel. humidity
Feeding: bramble
Breeding: oviposition of single eggs into leaves (e.g. ivy), hatching after approx. 70 days.
Advice/Specifics: for oviposition we used ivy or Scindapus; the exchange of the plants from time to time increases their life time and therefore increases the hatching rate. Losses can occur due to intraspecific aggression.

Ancylecha fenestrata is a species of katydid, a leaf grasshopper. I breed this striking species for more than a year now. I got my specimens as juveniles. They need warm temperatures (20°C is enough) and good humidity and ventilation. They feed on a lot of things: Ligustrum (privet), Hypericum, Buddleia and various species of Rubus (bramble, raspberry). They also accept pieces of fruits like apple These insects are very shy and they only move sligthly at nighttime. Males also sing, briefly.
A few months ago, I was lucky to suprise one of my female while it was sheding skin. Recently, they laid a few dozens eggs, so I expect to have a new generation quite soon.
